As long as any of us have been reloading, we have been using comparators. These are simple items meant to let us measure seating depth and headspace between cases. If you reload alone, always use the same components and calibers, and don’t tinker around, these are a solid option.
Really though, that’s not us. We like to use different components, we like to compare, and we want to know that the measurements we are taking are a little more than relative. This is why we are making our ZERO measurement gauges.
GENERAL CONSTRUCTION
To make these measurement gauges, they all needed to be the same. Exactly the same. And they had to stay that way. All of these parts are made on our world-class DMG Mori lathes, from American steel, cut with reamers for consistency, and then nitrided to help them last a lifetime.
HEADSPACE GAUGES
Headspace gauges don’t need the be complicated, they just need to be correct, and exceedingly consistent. This led us to a traditional datum-style gauge – as we believe it provides the most true measurement – cut with a reamer to keep our diameter, face, and radius as consistent as possible. Again, this is in an effort to allow you to compare your measurements with someone from North Dakota or Nevada or the Netherlands, knowing that the numbers on your caliper mean something.

BULLET OGIVE
This one is a little more intricate. While most ogive comparators work on a standard datum measurement, like our headspace gauges, we thought there was a much more appropriate way to measure the ogive of a bullet. We have designed and are using custom tooling that allows us to replicate the lead area of your barrel’s chamber (if it has the standard 1.5* lead). The goal here is to allow you to measure seating depth and jump the only way that it matters, and that’s relative to your chamber. This will reduce the large swings in gauge readings from one projectile class to another, allowing you to see what really matters.

HEIGHT GAUGE
When building this kit, we also decided we wanted you to have the option to use it like a tool we use every day in the shop – a height gauge. This heavy steel base, with rubber bottom, will keep your measuring tool in place, clicking the tool in with magnets, and add to the flow of your reloading QC process. NOTE: This base is a separate item, and is not included in the kit unless specifically called out.

Just got this kit and was wondering how you can get a seating depth when using Hornady OAL gauge as I have to remove the base to fit the tool. The base on this comparator is recessed and I assume this will throw off the measurement when I put the base back on to check seating depth.

In load development determining length to ogive was often a finicky process for me. Using this I trust the measurement the first time. These are made from steel and designed to more accurately replicate the throat of chamber. It makes a noticeable difference.

The price is what it is, but this is better and more consistent than my other comparator. Establishing the JAM on a new rifle was much easier. Checking shoulder bump is much more consistent with less fidgeting to get the cartridge base aligned. The fit to the ogive of a bullet is TIGHT with no wiggle. Super Happy with the repeatability and the build quality of product but coming from Area 419 I would have figured that when changing between adapter inserts that they would all have the same precision height. I know it’s not a big deal to zero out the caliper after changing inserts but it’s the small things that make precision equipment worth that extra cost.

Well made. I agree a bench top laminated headspace collar card by cartridge, along with a url with where to find updates, would be helpful and could easily fit in the box. I’m also looking forward to the cost effective additions in ogive washers for .270/6.8 and .257. 🙂

Great product. Would suggest a short instruction card to be included in the box. A chart showing which collet to use when checking “shoulder bump” would assure consistency in measurement when using with various calibers i.e. 222 Rem Mag, 6 mm Dasher, 6.5 Creedmoor etc. 7 mm PRC for example.
I ordered the stand for holding the calipers – it fit perfectly in the center of the dies in the Area 419 Zero Press. It is at eye height therefore easy to read and stable to do the measurements. I will send a photo in a separate email.
